Bhowali

With the aim of motivating the participation of the public and shopkeepers on the 14^th September ’07 in Bhowali, “The Himalayan Helpers", the community, school students  and the cadets of the NCC, held a rally followed by a cleaning of the main temple in the market and main bazaar.

A week later, posters "We discourage the use of polythene. Please do not ask for polythene bags. Please bring your own carrybags" were posted at shops around the market with the cooperation of the shop-owners, the shopkeepers’ union and Nagar Palika. The shop-owners were also asked to take responsibility for the immediate street section to keep it clean to which most agreed. This initiative has had a visible impact.  

The Himalayan Helpers in Bhowali have since agreed to work under the banner of My Clean India.  

In January 08, The Himalayan Helpers have been distributing free-of-charge paper bags to shops to replace polythene with excellent cooperation.

Rally by schoolchildren and NCC cadets through the town to remind people about cleanliness.

Poster competition on the theme of clean environment-among schools in Bhowali--two sections-junior and senior prizes distributed.. Winning posters displayed during rally.      

Printed pledge taken by schoolchildren to shops in the market and various homes and signed by them to keep their surroundings clean.

2.Creating awareness among the shopkeepers and the public about the need to stop using polythene by putting up posters and banners.  

3 Motivating  schools to join in the clean. Bhowali campaign by taking out rallies with banners, holding essay competitions, slogan competitions, and poster competitions.  

4. Creating a system of awards and recognition for shopkeepers who sincerely follow the clean Bhowali aim.

 5.Motivating residents to keep their surroundings clean by personal visits and distribution of pamphlets.

 6.Instituting awards and recognition for the cleanest colony or ward.  

7. Organising cleanup campaign by volunteers to carry out cleaning of specific areas –setting examples.  

8. Distributing free paper  bags to shopkeepers to motivate them to stop use of polythene bags.  

9. Putting up posters in shops requesting customers not to ask for polythene bags,but to bring there own carrybags,when they come shopping.  

10, Interacting with Nagarpalika to put up proper garbage bins, and make an effective garbage collection programme.
