With the aim of motivating the participation of the public and
shopkeepers on the 14th September ’07 in Bhowali, “The
Himalayan Helpers", the community, school students and the
cadets of the NCC, held a rally followed by a cleaning of the main
temple in the market and main bazaar.
A week later, posters "We discourage the use of polythene. Please
do not ask for polythene bags. Please bring your own carrybags"
were posted at shops around the market with the cooperation of the
shop-owners, the shopkeepers’ union and Nagar Palika. The
shop-owners were also asked to take responsibility for the immediate
street section to keep it clean to which most agreed. This
initiative has had a visible impact.
The Himalayan Helpers in Bhowali have since agreed to work under the
banner of My Clean India.
In January 08, The Himalayan Helpers have been distributing
free-of-charge paper bags to shops to replace polythene with
excellent cooperation.
